INSURANCE TIPS
Save Money on Homeowners Insurance
Discounts
Your Independent Agent can determine your eligibility for discounts. An example of discounts on German Mutual Insurance policies include a new home discount.
Protect your home against common losses
Keep a fire extinguisher handy, especially in the kitchen, garage and laundry room. Quit smoking. Careless smoking causes over 23,000 residential fires annually. Regularly check your roof, down spouts and water pipes for clogs and leaks. Discourage crime by installing deadbolt locks and lighting entranceways. Keep sidewalks, railings and steps in good repair.
Raise your deductible
Decide how much deductible you can afford if you have a claim. When you raise your deductible, you are responsible for smaller losses, lowering your premium and chances for frequent claims
Review your policy annually
Make sure your policy coverage is up to date.
Inventory Tips
No one plans to lose his or her possessions in a fire, natural disaster or burglary.
If this happened to you, would you be able to report exactly what you lost? Making an inventory of your belongings may be a time consuming task, but it is much easier to do now rather than after you have incurred a loss.
- To start, write down categories on a piece of paper.
- You might want to include appliances, furniture, electronics, fine art, hobby items, collectibles, jewelry, tools and clothing.
- For larger items, record serial numbers.
- Whenever you can, save receipts when items are purchased.
- It is important to note purchase price and date purchased.
- Remember to include the contents of your closets and storage areas.
- Videotaping each room of your house can make this process easier. Photographs and a tape recorder can substitute for a video camera. Your video inventory should include verbal descriptions of major assets, as well as their value.
- Store your inventory, along with receipts, appraisals, etc. in a safe location away from your premises (i.e. safe deposit box).
- Remember to keep your inventory up-to-date. A good practice is to look at it each December and make revisions if needed.
